Troubleshooting Carbon Fiber Heater Tripping Issues

Recent customer feedback indicates that after installing carbon fiber heaters, they trip immediately upon turning on. What are the possible reasons for this issue when the heater trips after being powered on? We need to systematically troubleshoot circuit anomalies.

Firstly, ensure that the circuit breaker’s current rating is appropriate. Overloading can cause the breaker to trip, but it usually happens after a delay rather than immediately upon powering on, especially if the heat dissipation is efficient. The rated current of the breaker should be slightly higher than the normal operating current of the entire circuit. For instance, if the total equipment power is 10KW at 220V, the rated current of the circuit should be 45A, requiring a D63 breaker. Common breaker types include D20, D32, D50, D63, and D80, all typically equipped with residual current protection, with fewer standard breakers in use.

Secondly, verify if the wiring of the RCD (Residual Current Device) is correct. In one instance, miswiring the RCD caused immediate tripping upon turning on the switch. It was later found that the neutral wire was bypassing the RCD, a mistake uncommon among electricians. However, when connecting circuits with RCDs, attention should be paid to the following:

  1. Ensure Correct Wiring: Do not reverse the connections marked “Power Supply Side” and “Load Side” of the RCD. Reversing them can prevent the RCD from properly disconnecting power, potentially leading to circuit damage over extended periods.
  2. Maintain Safety Features: Do not remove or bypass existing safety measures like thermal relays or fuses after installing an RCD. An RCD serves as additional electrical protection but does not eliminate all electrical hazards.
  3. Proper Wiring: When installing an RCD, differentiate between neutral and protective lines. For three-phase four-wire or four-wire systems with RCDs, the neutral line should be connected to the RCD. The neutral line passing through the RCD must not be used as a protective line.
  4. Avoid Grounding Errors: The working neutral wire of the RCD should not be grounded on the load side. Improper grounding can disrupt the RCD’s function.
  5. Separate Circuits: The neutral wire of the RCD should only serve its respective circuit and should not be shared with other circuits. Likewise, other circuits should not borrow the neutral wire from a circuit with an installed RCD to avoid tripping.

Thirdly, confirm if there is any short circuit in the circuit. Short circuits are hazardous, potentially damaging electrical components or causing fires. Therefore, pay special attention during circuit connections to prevent short circuits. How do you determine if there is a short circuit in the circuit? We can use a multimeter to measure whether there is a short circuit phenomenon in the circuit.

When using a multimeter to test for short circuits, remember to disconnect the power first to avoid safety accidents. Testing steps: First, disconnect the power, set the multimeter to the buzzer mode, which is the light-emitting diode mode. Use one end of the meter needle to contact one wire in the circuit, and then use the other meter needle to contact another wire. This way to measure whether there is a short circuit between the two wires. If the multimeter emits a buzzing sound, there is a short circuit between the two wires.

Fourthly, check if there is any leakage at the wiring junctions in the circuit. This issue can usually be prevented by paying a little more attention during wiring. During wiring, simply wrap each wiring junction with several turns of insulating tape.
